Dorsey Hager, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to talk about the out-of-town construction manager hired for to oversee work at John Glenn Columbus International Airport that refuses to sign a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA).
Columbus has been experiencing the largest construction boom in its modern history, with many projects operating under a CBA. But that has not been the case at is the John Glenn Columbus International Airport. Despite the airport board’s conversations with Hager and the C/COBCTC about utilizing a Community Benefits Agreement, the construction manager is fighting against such an agreement.
Hager talked about the conversations and the positive nature of the talks with the Columbus Regional Aviation Authority (CRAA) board about the importance of using a CBA to create opportunities for local workers. As a part of their efforts to educate the board on the dangers of using this out-of-town construction manager that doesn’t want to use local workers, Hager shared letters from labor supporters to the board about previous issues with the company.
According to Hager, the airport project is the largest project utilizing public funds. In response to the decision by the board, Hager outlined the next steps for the Columbus Building Trades and other local pro-labor organizations.
