Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer Dorsey Hager made his monthly appearance on the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the Honda and LG electric vehicle battery plant that will be built in Fayette County.

The plant, located in the village of Jeffersonville, is expected to cost about $3.5 billion and should be completed in 26 months under a Project Labor Agreement. Hager said the PLA is nearly finalized, as an estimated 4,300 to 5,500 building trades members will be needed to turn around the project on such a tight deadline. He called the project an incredible opportunity for Ohio, the building trades and numerous apprenticeship programs throughout the state.

Hager then talked about the need to expand the Building Futures and Driving Futures programs in order to keep up with Central Ohio’s construction boom. He believes apprenticeship programs around the region should expand to accommodate the demand, for more construction workers.

Hager also provided an update on the Intel semi-conductor plant being built in New Albany. Sitework is currently being performed and he expects iron and steel to be put into the ground early in 2023. He added that Bechtel was named the project’s general contractor.
